A mark can be named in an AI response without its site being quoted. A page can also be used as a source without being recommended as a service provider. Measure these situations separately, then check the context and the actual visits observed.
Define observable events
A mention corresponds to the presence of the name in the answer. A citation has a visible reference to a source. A recommendation involves an appreciation or selection in a given context. Note the ambiguities: homonym, truncated name, incorrect domain or quote from a third party. These distinctions avoid presenting an occurrence as a preference. Keep the definition used in your follow-up.
Read reports with their limits
Bing's AI Performance report describes the citations visible in supported experiments. A citation is not a click and the aggregated data is not an exhaustive log. Use this report to identify which pages to review. Confront observations with measured visits and commercial requests, without adding indicators of a different nature.
A statement sheet that keeps the evidence separate
For each manual observation, keep a line describing the question and another describing the result. The first allows you to redo the test; The second keeps what was actually seen. Do not overwrite an old answer by the most recent. An absence of citation can also be a useful observation, provided that the same collection rules have been applied.
| Observed result | Classification selected | What we can't deduce |
|---|---|---|
| The name of the agency appears unrelated | brand mention | The site has been viewed or recommended |
| An agency guide is displayed as a source | Quote from a page | A user has opened this source |
| The engine offers to contact this agency | Recommendation in this context | A stable preference for all audiences |
| A visit comes with an identifiable referent | Visit observed by the site tool | a qualified request or a sale |
| A request received spontaneously cites an assistant | Declared qualitative return | A comprehensive allocation of conversions |
The report AI Bing performance Provides aggregate observations of the experiments it covers. It does not replace your site data. Do not mix its citations with manual captures in the same total: units, coverage and collection methods differ. Keep a table by source, then bring the trends closer to their limits.
Keep an evidence log
Archive the question, engine, language, date and session context. Save the useful passage and the displayed URLs. Repeat the observations instead of choosing only the favorable response. If the answer does not use a web search, indicate it: it does not necessarily measure the discovery of new pages. Also note cases where no link can be opened.
Fictional example: a misinterpreted quote
An engine cites an agency's guide to explain a redirection, then recommends another provider. The guide was quoted; The agency was not recommended. Monitoring can enhance this informative contribution while maintaining the distinction. If a mention describes a non-existent service, the priority is the verification of public information, not the artificial increase in the number of mentions.
Check a source instead of just counting the links
- Open the reference and identify the passage that supports the answer sentence. If the link returns to a general page, note that the precise support remains to be verified.
- Compare the context: product, company, country, date and conditions. A correct statement on another version may be misleading for the question asked.
- Identify the accuracy of the response and the quality of the link separately. A good source can be misinterpreted; An exact answer may not provide an actionable reference.
- Keep a favorable example and an unfavorable example when they appear in your panel. Removing the annoying results would make the comparison unhelpful.
Imagine a response that associates an article on restoring backups with a permanently available service. If the page does not promise this availability, the quote does not justify the promise. The correction consists of clarifying the offer and documenting the observed error. It would be excessive to present the survey as proof of reputation or commercial effectiveness.
The next work should focus on the issue that matters to the company: are the sources accurate, useful pages and relevant requests? The Click-free search tracking helps complete this reading. This device is proposed to make better decisions; It is not an official LLM trust indicator.
Link observations to a decision
Sort the answers between accurate, incomplete and erroneous information. For each page cited, check if it offers a relevant sequence. The variations of an engine are not enough to assign a result to a modification of the site. Complete with the Measuring assistant traffic and prospect returns. A useful table leads to content decisions.
